This event is 21 and over

Endoxa Booking and Lil Indies are hosting a night of philosophical discussion and drinking. The topic for May 30th is capital punishment. Although the rate at which state-sanctioned executions in the United States has declined almost yearly since 1999, there have still been nine such killing this year, and 1451 since 1976. Gallup reports that 60% of survey respondents favor the death penalty for those convicted of murder, so Capital Punishment is still very much a part of American culture. Even popular beliefs should be examined, however, so that's what we'll do. Our central question is: when, if ever, is Capital Punishment morally justified?

This event is intended to foster discussion and drinking in a fun atmosphere. There will be a brief (15 - 20 minutes) presentation of the issue followed by general discussion and argument. All are strongly encouraged to participate in the discussion (that’s the whole point!).

How do we define relationships of power, and how does our very understanding of these relationships factor into issues of oppression and responsibility? This is a broad topic that encompasses numerous kinds of relationships (between concepts, individuals, groups, and societies). Our discussion will focus on how conceiving ourselves through these relationships is a crucial factor for understanding who we are.
