Americans' frustration and antipathy towards their political and social institutions is at alarming levels. Governments, corporations, political parties, churches, and politicians are by and large viewed with contempt. This frustration is compounded by the belief that it is difficult -- if not impossible -- to achieve meaningful, positive change through political action. Given this level of mistrust, we might ask: is it rational to vote for anyone's interests but your own?

This event is intended to foster discussion and drinking in a fun atmosphere. There will be a brief (15 - 20 minutes) presentation of the issue followed by general discussion and argument. All are strongly encouraged to participate (that’s the whole point!).

Does the advancement of the internet, and technology in general, signal greater access and use of knowledge for a wide range of people? While some have claimed the internet functions as a kind of ‘democratization of knowledge’, others have argued such wide-ranging access has fostered little progress in creating a more informed populous. Does this mean that technological advancements have, in fact, done little to bolster educational and epistemic practices? Should we see the rapid pace of technological advancement as beneficial to society?
