Our society is experiencing a cultural dichotomy: tiresome remakes, done-to-death franchises, plagiarist pop art advertisements, but also independent craftsmen popping up on Etsy, and eco-friendly entrepreneurs going viral. How is our culture affecting art?

Kirsten Holt will be discussing the intersection between art and commerce, particularly as it relates to the wellspring of creativity. Discussion will start with a brief background of the funding of arts and crafts, and a distinction between the two, eventually moving to where we see our artists functioning today. The goal of the discussion is to ask if we are doing enough to keep our arts alive, or if a different model of thinking is necessary to avoid a modern dystopia.

Does the advancement of the internet, and technology in general, signal greater access and use of knowledge for a wide range of people? While some have claimed the internet functions as a kind of ‘democratization of knowledge’, others have argued such wide-ranging access has fostered little progress in creating a more informed populous. Does this mean that technological advancements have, in fact, done little to bolster educational and epistemic practices? Should we see the rapid pace of technological advancement as beneficial to society?

This event is intended to foster discussion and drinking in a fun atmosphere. There will be a brief (15 - 20 minutes) presentation of the issue followed by general discussion and argument. All are strongly encouraged to participate (that’s the whole point!).
